Tired of Making Your Utility Company Rich?

I recently reviewed of one of the best books that I have read in a long time. It is entitled The World is Flat, A Short History of the 21st Century by Thomas Friedman. This book outlines the state of the world as we know it, dynamic, interactive and interconnected. Friedman’s book is a very positive, uplifting and thought provoking look at our world today and the world of the future.

Another book, just as good a read, although more technical, involving energy use is Peak Oil, A View from Hubbert’s Peak by Kenneth Deffeyes. He explores the state of world oil production today and into the future. Dr. Deffeyes, a Princeton professor and geologist, notes that oil is a finite resource and that the world’s oil production has peaked. We have been using oil at a faster and faster pace. In fact, the world now consumes oil at about one thousand barrels per second according to Peter Tertzakian in his book entitled One Thousand Barrels per Second. (one barrel of oil contains 42 gallons).

So what do these two excellent, well written and researched books have to do with each other? One is about an expanding global economy, interconnected as never before. The other is about oil consumption exceeding supply. In fact, we are at the point where consumption has surpassed production globally. The global economy can only continue to expand if we have an adequate supply of energy.

India and China both have very rapidly expanding economies, 8 percent or more per year. These two countries are consuming vast amounts of the world’s energy, especially oil and coal to make their global dreams come true. They are transforming from third world countries to first world economies in less than one generation.

In other areas of the world, like South America, Argentina has turned its economy around and is expanding at close to 8% per year. Brazil is independent of OPEC oil and is providing all of its own fuel using ethanol produced from sugar cane.

What do countries like Brazil understand that the United States doesn’t? Why is American importing 60% of its oil supply while Brazil is providing most of its energy from alternative sources, totally independent from foreign oil suppliers?
